What is a Architectural Column Cut Plan?

You would think that selecting the architectural columns you want for your home would be just as easy as it sounds. But that couldn't be further from the truth. When it comes to columns there are so many different choices and options - from material, height, diameter and capital decoration to whether you want the column split or whole.

When you finally make all of those decisions you are finally asked the question "What cut plan would you like?" You may be asking yourself "what exactly is a cut plan?".

A cut plan is simply how you would like your column to be split. There are so many places that columns can go on a structure so naturally companies have to give options for all of those places. The easiest way to give these options is to develop cut plans. Below you will find a list of each cut plan along with their use.

Cut Plan Descriptions

Cut Plan A - This is a whole round column that is structural and is not cut at all.

Cut Plan D - This is a round column that is split in half. It can be used to wrap around a lolly column or used as a pilaster.

Cut Plan S - This is a whole round column that is intended to go around a structural post.  It is important for us to know the post you are wrapping

Cut Plan L – This is an insertion cut for a round column and engages onto a wall.  We will ask the width of your wall and will make the cut to that specification.

Cut Plan C – This is a ¾ round pilaster cut.  We will ask what the return should be.

Cut Plan B – This is a ¾ cut designed for an outside corner.  We cut out 90 degrees of a whole column.

Cut Plan E – This is a whole square column that is structural and is not cut at all.

Cut plan T - This is a whole square column that is intended to go around a structural post.

Cut Plan F – This is a square column that is split in half. It is used to wrap around a lolly column or used as a pilaster.

Cut Plan H – This is a ¾ cut designed for an outside corner.  ¼ of the column is removed

Cut Plan I – This is an Insertion cut for a square column and engages onto a wall.  We will ask the width of your wall and will make the cut to that specification.

Cut Plan M – This is a ¾ square pilaster cut.  We will ask what the return should be.

Choosing your cut plan should be a simple process as long as you know how you want to use your architectural columns. Feel free to bookmark this during your building process so that you may use it as you need.
