Aside from their beauty and stateliness, cornices also can help throw rainwater off the face of a building, directing water toward the edge of a roof and into mounted gutters. In modern architecture, however, cornices are usually used more for decorative than functional reasons, though some building continue to use cornices for their rain catching features.

What are the different types/styles of cornices?

There are a variety of cornice designs and styles, including the box cornice, the closed cornice, the open cornice, and the cavetto cornice.

- Box cornices enclose the building with a long narrow box and is commonly used on houses with wide eaves and a gentle sloped roof.

- Closed cornices do not feature projections of the rafters beyond the building's walls. They are easy to build but don't help as much in dispersing rain water or providing a more aesthetic look.

- Open cornices are similar in shape to  a wide box cornice, but without the soffit and lookouts.

- And finally, Cavetto Cornices are based on ancient Egyptian architectural style, with a plain vertical face above and a convex semi circle below. This style of cornice can also be found in ancient Greek architecture and middle eastern architecture.
