Fiberglass Column & Polyurethane Balustrade System install – Florida

This magnificent porch column and polyurethane balustrade system installation project was installed by Shaffer Building Repair, Inc. located in Boca Grande, Florida.  This residential installation of the porch system is highlighted by six 14” x 10’ Plain Round Tapered Fiberglass columns  on the 1st floor and five 12” x 8’ Plain Round Tapered columns  on the 2nd floor.  These columns were split for reassembly to surround a structural support which prevents uplift in the high wind areas such as Florida. The seam was well hidden by the installation crew using our fiberglass column split kit specifically designed to reassemble split fiberglass columns. Bondo was then later used to hide the seam and after drying was ready for priming and painting. As seen in these project photos, when done correctly, the split seam should not be noticeable.

Connecting to each of the round porch columns is the WorthingtonUrethane 3-5/8” Polyurethane balustrade system with the 1-3/4” x 28” H  square baluster.  As an added service, Shaffer Building, Inc. ordered the top and bottom rails pre-drilled to cut down on their installation time while onsite. Worthington offers this option to its clients and pre-drill the holes to meet the 4” ball rule spacing requirement as provided by most building codes. The 28” baluster gives a total rail height of 38” and this also meets the building code requirement of 36”. An excellent job was done by the installation crew in properly coping the rails to run into the round columns.

For this particular project the client used three different sized newel posts in different areas of the project to give this project a character of its own. On the main entrance the client used an 8” square newel post with recessed panels and a tapered capital.  On the side entrance to the same porch the 5-1/2” Recessed panel newel post was used with the tapered pyramid capital also. On an additional porch, on the opposite side of the house, a plain newel post was used for the small deck. All three porches have stair application in which Shaffer Building carefully cut each baluster to the rise and run of the stair.

This is an excellent example of how using exterior polyurethane and fiberglass architectural products can enhance a make a home project have excellent curb appeal. Both the columns and the balustrades are backed by a limited lifetime warranty and the homeowner can certainly understands this added value.
