Worthington’s exterior polyurethane millwork was used for the exterior cornices on the New Smyrna Elementary School in Smyrna, Georgia by the architectural firm Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews & Moore. The polyurethane material was selected by the architect due to the custom trim profiles that can be detailed with the flat board and radius shapes which give them a finished product that is aesthetically pleasing. Worthington provided two custom exterior brackets for the project application which were used by the architect to give the fascia more character. The crisp lines and radius details on this fascia and custom brackets are very difficult to achieve with other exterior products.
Worthington also worked very closely with Carroll Daniel Construction Company with the installation of the exterior polyurethane millwork. The exterior cornice consisted of five to 6 pieces of moulding shapes which was constructed onsite by the installer. We recommended an experienced installer who installed all of the soffit moldings from a lift and some scaffolding. In areas where the walls were out of plumb the installer was able to correct the voids with the polyurethane due to its ease of use. Over 2,000 linear feet of exterior crown moulding was installed on the soffit of this new school, and custom polyurethane brackets were tied into the detail of the cornice and were installed within one month.
During the preconstruction process Worthington was able to use standard profiles of our polyurethane moldings to create the exterior cornices that the architect had created. Once Worthington was selected for the project we created custom CAD drawings illustrating each part used and the dimension that it would create once installed. This helped both the architect and contractor to see what was included in their estimate and aided the installer in where each piece would be located once it became time to install the parts.
